Planning News

Recently, BCRD commissioned a feasibility assessment to evaluate sports and recreation infrastructure in Blaine County. As BCRD approaches its 50th anniversary, this assessment helps inform how to best serve the Wood River Valley’s recreational needs now and into the future.

The assessment outlines a growing demand for additional indoor and outdoor facilities, the limits of current infrastructure, and what BCRD needs to do address these issues. The assessment includes traditional sports, mostly for youth, including baseball, soccer, basketball, and lacrosse, and does not include BCRD’s trails systems.

Assessment Takeaways

Interviews, public surveys, and internal evaluations reveal a significant need for more indoor and outdoor facilities, highlighting the limitations of current infrastructure in meeting growing community needs.

The need for additional multi-use indoor facilities and expanded outdoor sports fields is evident from community feedback. There is also a voiced need for facilities including an indoor turf field and indoor swimming pool.

Current indoor spaces are constrained to school gyms and BCRD's leased facility, proving insufficient during peak hours and winter months. The absence of tournament-ready outdoor venues restricts the community's ability to host large sporting events.

In response, BCRD is initiating a master plan to develop new and existing facilities. This plan aims to meet growing demands, create a central multi-sport venue, and consider improvements to BCRD’s Aquatic Center and Quigley Trails Park.

BCRD's potential growth includes better coordination with the school district, private facility operators, upgrading existing facilities, and adding new ones.

The feasibility assessment suggests pursuing a comprehensive master plan, an operational and funding strategy, and the development of a new multi-purpose recreational facility.

Future planning may require land acquisition, with the proposed new facility envisioned to include a mix of indoor and outdoor spaces catering to a variety of sports and activities.

Quigley Loop Trail

In the summer months the Trail provides walking, biking, equestrian and scenic viewing opportunities for all ages and abilities. In winter, the Trail is groomed for Nordic skiing by the BCRD and serves as a key link for the north valley BCRD Nordic Trail system.

An example of community and public agency cooperation, the BCRD began construction of the trail in 1991 with a pledge from the Mary W. Harriman Foundation. Through community support, the BCRD was able to complete the Harriman Trail in July of 2001.

In partnership with the US Forest Service, the BCRD manages and maintains the Harriman Trail year-round.

Access the Quigley Loop Trail from Quigley Canyon Road. Your use of this area is permitted by the private landowner Quigley Farm. Please respect private property by restricting your access to designated trails. This property is permanently protected by a conservation easement with the Wood River Land Trust. The Quigley Loop Trail was a collaborative effort with Quigley Farm, the Wood River Land Trust, and the BCRD.
